What to know before you move

General

Do I still need Citavi afterwards?

No. You only need Zotero and Word. Bring your Citavi library into Zotero first with Zotero's import.

What do I need?

Zotero 7 or newer and Word with a .docx file. Tested on Mac. Windows test coming.

What about LibreOffice and Google Docs?

Not yet. CiteMove works with Word files (.docx) only.

Which Citavi versions work?

Tested with documents from Citavi 6. What matters is that the citations were inserted with the Citavi Word Add-in. The free check tells you right away whether your file is recognised.

Is my data stored or uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is processed on your computer and never transmitted. The plugin only contacts our payment provider to check your licence key. The website sets no cookies and uses no tracking scripts; visitor numbers come only from the hosting provider's server logs. Privacy policy

Conversion

What gets converted?

Every Citavi citation in the text and in footnotes, including page numbers and words like “cf.” in front of the citation. Your bibliography is replaced by Zotero's.

What happens to the headings in the bibliography?

The “Bibliography” heading stays. Subheadings such as “Sources” and “Literature” disappear, because Zotero sorts everything into one list. The report tells you beforehand how many there are.

Which citation styles work?

Every Zotero style, more than 10,000. You pick the style in Word after Refresh. Your university's own Citavi style (.ccs) is not converted.

Why do some German titles show up in English title case?

The source has no language in Zotero. Set the source's Language field to “de” and click Refresh in Word. In Word: Zotero → Document Preferences → Language → German. In CiteMove's settings you can choose a default language for new sources.

Does it work with footnotes and law?

Footnotes, yes. For law with commentaries and court decisions, look at the free report first. Whatever is unclear stays as text and gets a comment.

What about my original?

It is never changed. You get a new file with “_zotero” at the end of the name. An existing file is never overwritten.

What happens to sources that are not in my Zotero library?

They are created from the Citavi data inside the document, in the collection “Aus Citavi”. Unclear matches are shown to you for checking first. CiteMove never modifies existing Zotero items.

What if a citation is not converted?

It stays as text, unchanged, and gets a comment in Word with the reason. The report lists these citations before you convert. You insert them in Word by hand via Zotero → Add/Edit Citation.

Pass and payment

What is free, what costs money?

Downloading, checking your document, the report and checking unclear sources are free, as often as you like. You need a pass to convert: Thesis Pass 19 € one-time (60 days, 1 computer) or Annual Pass 39 € per year (2 computers). Pricing

How do I get the key?

After buying, Lemon Squeezy, our payment provider, e-mails you the licence key and the order number. You enter the key in the plugin when you click “Convert”.

On how many computers can I use the pass, and how do I move it?

Thesis Pass: 1 computer. Annual Pass: 2 computers at the same time. To move: click “Remove pass” under Settings in CiteMove, then enter the key on the other computer. If the old computer is no longer available, write to us with your order number.

What happens after the Thesis Pass's 60 days?

Converting stops working, the check keeps working. The pass does not renew by itself. If you need one again later, you buy a new one.

How do I cancel the Annual Pass?

Via the link in your order e-mail from Lemon Squeezy or with a short e-mail to us. The pass runs until the end of the year you paid for and is then not renewed.

Do I need internet?

Once, to activate. After that CiteMove checks the pass online before every conversion; without a connection, converting still works for 14 days.

Who issues the invoice?

For the passes: Lemon Squeezy (Link, LLC) as the merchant of record. The invoice comes with the order e-mail; VAT is included in the price. For “We do it for you”: RAVIA OPS LIMITED, by e-mail, 79 € final price, no VAT charged, payable by bank transfer before delivery.

What if something goes wrong?

Refund: If CiteMove technically cannot convert your document and we cannot fix it within 7 days, you get your money back. The free check shows you beforehand what will work. After a successful conversion there is no refund. How refunds work

Technical

Does CiteMove run on Windows?

Tested on Mac. Windows test coming. The plugin is not tied to an operating system. The check is free, so just try it.

Do I get updates?

Yes. Zotero checks regularly whether a new version of CiteMove is available and installs it. Under Tools → Plugins you can see your version.

How do I report a bug?

Click “Save error report” in the error screen and send us the file together with your Citavi version at hello@citemove.com. More on the contact page.
